Power over Ethernet and network range extender

OUTREACH Max G extends gigabit Ethernet to 200 metres with full POE pass-through, ideal for deployment of wireless access points and IP cameras.

OUTREACH Max G easily overcomes the distance limits of POE networks

Simply connecting an OUTREACH Max G in line with the network cable instantly doubles the range from 100 metres (328 ft) to 200 metres (656 ft) with POE.

Cable lengths in Ethernet networks are limited to 100 metres (328 ft), which is a serious restriction for many security installations.

OUTREACH Max G enables installers to overcome this network limitation. Simply connecting an OUTREACH Max G in line with the network cable instantly doubles the range from 100 metres to 200 metres (656 ft).

    Simple to install

Fitting OUTREACH Max G is simple because no set-up is required. Its only connections are two RJ45 network ports, both of which immediately self-configure for 10Base-T, 100Base-TX or 1000Base-T operation. POE power is automatically transferred between connected equipment. No local power supply connection is needed, because OUTREACH Max G is powered by POE.

OUTREACH Max G can easily be located anywhere along the network cable, as long as no single length of cable is greater than 100 metres. For example, to extend the network connection between a POE switch and an IP camera to 170 metres, an OUTREACH Max G could be installed 90 metres from the switch. A further 80 metres of cable would run from the OUTREACH Max G to the camera.

    Max POE power
OUTREACH Max G enables network range extension to all POE devices that are compatible with IEEE 802.3af, which is the universal POE standard for low power network devices such as fixed IP cameras.

In addition, OUTREACH Max G is compatible with POE Plus (IEEE 802.3at) and higher power 4-pair POE (IEEE 802.3bt) up to 90W.

Note that OUTREACH Max G is designed for connection to POE compatible equipment only. If POE power is not required, Veracity's OUTREACH Lite G should be specified instead.

    Go further

If POE and network extension beyond 200 metres (656 ft) is required, more than one OUTREACH Max G may be installed in series. For example, a 300 metre (984 ft) connection between a POE switch and a 10 watt IP camera can be achieved by fitting two OUTREACH Max G units at 100 metre intervals along the cable. The maximum extension distance depends on how much power is required and which POE source is used. See the tables on the next page or read Veracity's "Long Range Ethernet Extension" white paper on our website.

For longer Ethernet runs, Veracity recommends the LONGSPAN long distance point-to-point devices, which can achieve 100Base-TX connections with POE at up to 820m (2,690ft).

    No restrictions

All OUTREACH devices restore the network connection like a switch, so when placed at 100m intervals along the cable they can deliver full bandwidth Ethernet over the full distance of 200m, 300m or further. The "G" models deliver gigabit Ethernet, maximising performance and transparency, with no risk of reduced or unpredictable bandwidth.

Four 8-channel Base units provide 32 IP channels in 1U, with space for an optional IU power supply and up to 25W POE per channel

    Proven Technology

Veracity's HIGHWIRE technology has been proven in tens of thousands of installations over many years, delivering high-reliability full 100Base-TX Ethernet in all conditions. This offers consistent, predictable, IP video network performance even with today's high resolution HD and 4K IP cameras, delivering a full speed over 300m of RG59 cable, and 500m over RG11.

    Multi-Channel Rack Mount Unit

Base 8 integrates eight HIGHWIRE channels and a gigabit switch into a single unit. It is specifically designed to allow rack-mounting of up to four units in 1U, giving 32 channels per U. Veracity's unique 57V rack-mounted POE power supply accessory can be mounted in the same 1U.

    Cost-effective Network Connection

The integration of a Gigabit switch reduces the number of main switch ports required to connect many IP video cameras. Thus each HIGHWIRE Powerstar Base 8 unit requires only one main switch port, or 4 network ports for 32 channels. Each Base 8 unit also has a rear mounted SFP socket for an optional SFP fibre Ethernet module.

    Base and Camera Units

In the diagram below, the HIGHWIRE Powerstar Base 8 unit is connected to 8 legacy coaxial cable links. At the camera ends, there are single-channel HIGHWIRE Powerstar Camera units connected to each link. The original analogue cameras are replaced by new IP cameras which are connected to HIGHWIRE Camera units. The Base 8 unit is powered by a Veracity 57V PSU and power is delivered up the coax to power the HIGHWIRE Camera units which, in turn, power the IP cameras.

    Simple Installation

With no need to configure IP addresses, set DIP switches, or pair units, installing HIGHWIRE Powerstar is straightforward. As soon as power is applied, the IP cameras will power up and their IP addresses will become available on the network. The zero configuration HIGHWIRE units are completely network transparent.

    Multiple Channels per Coax

HIGHWIRE Powerstar Base 8 is compatible with Veracity's Powerstar Duo and Quad Camera units, connecting multiple IP cameras over a single coax. For example, an obsolete analogue PTZ camera could be replaced by four low-cost static IP cameras using a Powerstar Quad unit.

Connect up to four IP cameras with HIGHWIRE Powerstar Quad over an existing coax cable

HIGHWIRE Powerstar Quad uses existing coax cabling as a reliable Ethernet network connection and is very easy to use and fast to install.

    Ethernet Over Coax

HIGHWIRE Powerstar Quad's unique ultra low-power design and efficient power delivery enables long range Ethernet over coax. It works even over the lowest grade cable, such as the highresistance, copper-clad steel (CCS) types found in many legacy installations. This means that legacy coax upgrades can be planned with confidence, while a quick check of the SafeView™ power level display reaffirms that the device connections will continue to be reliable, whatever the cable used.

For predictable network operation with no restrictions, HIGHWIRE technology delivers a full 200Mbit/s of bandwidth at 300m (1000 ft) of RG-59 or 500m (1600 ft) of RG-11 coax. For full information on POE-over-Coax™ distances achievable, please refer to the Range Table in the HIGHWIRE Powerstar datasheet or on the Veracity website. For POE power budget and power supply options, see the POE Power Budget Table opposite.

    HIGHWIRE Powerstar QUAD

The QUAD variant of HIGHWIRE is designed for the camera end of the coax and, with an integrated four-port POE switch, enables connection of up to four IP cameras over a single coax. With no need to configure IP addresses, set DIP switches, or make awkward measurements and calculations, installing HIGHWIRE Powerstar QUAD is simple. The Base end of the coax is driven by single-channel, 4-channel or 8-channel HIGHWIRE Powerstar Base unit. The QUAD unit can be powered either by POE over coax, delivering a maximum total POE power budget of 25 watts, or by one of the optional local PSUs, delivering 40 or 78 watts. HIGHWIRE Powerstar Quad features Veracity's unique SafeView™ display, to provide IP camera installers with an instant and very easy-to-understand confirmation of correct operation from either end of the cable.

HIGHWIRE Powerstar Quad allows one analogue camera to be replaced with four IP cameras

POE over Coax or Local Power

In the simplest implementation (shown below left) the BASE unit receives power from a standard POE switch or Veracity's 57V DC PSU and transmits POE over the coax. The QUAD unit receives this power and delivers up to 25 watts shared between up to four IP cameras. No external power cabling is required, and all detection and setup occurs automatically. For higher POE power budgets, an optional Veracity 57V DC PSU may be used to power the QUAD locally at the camera end (shown below right) delivering 40 watts or 78 watts depending on PSU model. See POE budget table for details

OUTREACH Lite overcomes the distance limits of Ethernet, instantly

Simply connect an OUTREACH Lite in line with the network cable and instantly double its range to 200 metres (656 ft). No set-up or network configuration is required.

Ethernet is the ubiquitous technology for Local Area Network (LAN) installation, and the majority of networks in place
use the 100BASE-T network standards. However, many security installations demand network connections that exceed the maximum 100 metres (328 feet) distance limit for wired Ethernet.

OUTREACH Lite provides an instant solution to this restriction. Simply connect an OUTREACH Lite in line with the network cable adding a Power over Ethernet (POE) injector if required to double the available range to 200 metres (656 feet).

    Simple installation
OUTREACH Lite takes advantageof the universal 802.3af POE standard, so it can draw its own power from the network connection. No local power is required, so OUTREACH Lite can be located exactly where it is needed.

If your network switch has POE, simply connect OUTREACH Lite up to 100 metres from the switch, and it will deliver another 100 metres' reach over regular Cat 5e or similar cable (Diagram 1). If POE is not available, the link can easily be upgraded using a low-cost POE injector such as Veracity's OUTSOURCE (Diagram 2). No set-up or network configuration is required, as OUTREACH Lite automatically sets up network speed, duplex and crossover on connection, and does not require an IP or MAC address.

    Go further
If POE and network extension beyond 200 metres (656 feet) is required, Veracity's OUTREACH Max may be installed to extend Ethernet and POE to OUTREACH Lite.

For example, a 400 metre (1312 feet) connection between a POE switch and another network device can be achieved
by fitting two OUTREACH Maxes at 100 metre intervals along the cable, followed by an OUTREACH Lite.

Unrestricted network connections up to 2.2 kilometres (1.4 miles) are possible, depending on configuration and POE source. See the OUTREACH MAx x T datasheet, or read Veracity's "Long Range Ethernet Extension" white paper.

    No restrictions
BecauseOUTREACHMaxand OUTREACH Lite simply restore the network connection every 100 metres, the full (200Mbit/s) bandwidth of 100BASE-T Ethernet is maintained across the entire link. This maximises performance and transparency, with no risk of a reduced or unpredictable bandwidth, even at distances of several hundred metres or more.

LINKLOCK™ technology provides secure tamper-proof network connections over coax cable

LINKLOCK options are available in Veracity's high performance HIGHWIRE Powerstar Base 4 and Base 8 Ethernet and POE over coax devices.

    • Tamper-proof Ethernet and POE over coax
    • 8 tamper-proof channels per Base unit
    • Tampering or interference with cabling shuts down channel
    • Relay contact alarm output on tamper, with reset pins
    • 32 POE or POE Plus channels in 1U with four Base units
    • Automatic configuration for simple installation
    • Full duplex 100Base-TX performance on each coax
LINKLOCK™ provides a secure barrier to unauthorised access to your network
LINKLOCK™ detects any disconnection/reconnection or tampering with any part of the cabling between the Base unit and the IP camera or other POE device.

    When Is LINKLOCK Required ?
Any externally mounted IP cameras potentially leave an exposed network connection which could be used by attackers to access the rest of the network - to disable the surveillance system for example. This may also expose the corporate network as this is often bridged to the surveillance network. LINKLOCK prevents such attacks by completely disconnecting power and data for that channel whenever it detects a cable disconnection or reconnection or even any tampering such as "tapping in" to the coax or network cables.

    How Does LINKLOCK Work ?
LINKLOCK works by constantly monitoring the POE power connection and data transmissions. It can detect even subtle changes or interruptions in the data transmission characteristics which will trigger disconnection and alarm, whilst remaining extremely robust against false alarms. Once triggered and disconnected, the channel can be re-established via the reset pins after suitable action is taken to determine the cause of the alarm (i.e. a possible attacker).

    HIGHWIRE Powerstar Base LINKLOCK Option
LINKLOCK™ is available as an option on Veracity's HIGHWIRE Powerstar Base 4 and Base 8 models of Ethernet and POE over coax adaptors. The Base unit accepts external power via a POE switch or a DC power supply. It sends power over the coax link to the Camera unit. The camera unit in turn provides POE (Power-overEthernet) to the IP camera. See HIGHWIRE Powerstar Base 4 or Base 8 datasheets for full information on HIGHWIRE.

    LINKLOCK provides
protection to both the coaxial cable and the Ethernet cable connecting the IP camera to the HIGHWIRE Camera unit (sections A and B in the diagram opposite). LINKLOCK disconnection (blocking mode) is triggered when: The coaxial cable A is disconnected The Ethernet cable B is disconnected The coaxial cable A is disrupted The Ethernet cable B is disrupted Note that having a secure or encrypted link over the coax alone does not prevent intrusion as the Ethernet link to the camera would still be open and unsecured without LINKLOCK.
When blocking mode is enabled, all external equipment is immediately isolated from the internal LAN. The internally-located HIGHWIRE Powerstar Base 4 or 8 unit will : Remove POE Power from the coaxial cable (this disconnects and switches off the HIGHWIRE Camera unit and IP camera). Completely disable its coaxial network interface for the triggered channel only. Close the alarm relay contact and indicate the alarm channel with a red LED.
