The Cisco^© Wireless IP Phone 8821 is a ruggedized, resilient, and secure 802.11 wireless LAN handset that delivers cost-effective, on-premises, comprehensive Voice over Wireless LAN (VoWLAN) communications for the highly mobile in-campus worker.

The 8821 is specifically designed for workers whose roles are in more rigorous, industrial settings. Examples of ideal use cases include nurses and doctors in healthcare, operations and engineering staff in manufacturing, customer service representatives in retail, service staff such as maids in hospitality, and workers on rigs in the oil and chemical industries.

While the 8821 is sleek and lightweight, the design is hardened for users. It is Ingress Protection standard (IP54) rated and is sealed for protection against dust, splash and water. The device is also MIL-STD-810G tested, with a dozen drops onto concrete from heights of up to 5 feet (1.5 m), to help ensure shock resistance and avoid breakage if dropped.

The 8821 enhances security and simplifies configuration management. Stronger encryption is supported for certificate management and policy enablement with the support of Secure Hash Algorithm 2 (SHA-2). Simple Certificate Enrollment Protocol (SCEP) eases IT administration by enabling automatic certificate management on the device.

End users will enjoy a larger, higher-resolution color display and a user experience that is common with Cisco IP Phone 8800 Series desk phones. In addition, roaming between access points within the campus will support more seamless voice communications with the 8821's support of Fast Transition (802.11r). This protocol was specifically designed for mobile Voice over IP (VoIP) communications devices within Wi-Fi networks. Bluetooth is supported for the user's choice of third-party wireless headsets and adds freedom by untethering the user from the handset.

The 8821 supports Cisco and/or third-party XML applications such as push-to-talk.

The 8821-EX builds upon all of the features offered by the Cisco Wireless IP Phone 8821 and adds nonsparking support for temporary exposure within potentially combustible environments. It is certified for CSA Class I Division 2, as well as (pending) ATEX Zone 2 Group IIC. ATEX Zone 2 is defined as an area in which an explosive gas atmosphere is not likely to occur in normal operation and, if it does occur, is likely to do so only infrequently and will exist for a short period only (for example, less than 10 hours per year). Similarly, CSA Class I is a location where a quantity of flammable gas or vapor sufficient to produce an explosive or ignitable mixture may be present in the air. Division 2 is a location where a classified hazard does not normally exist but is possible under abnormal conditions. Zone 2 is an area in which an explosive gas atmosphere does not normally exist.

Call coverage is critical for administrative assistants and others who must monitor and manage the status of calls. It requires the ability to instantly determine the status of numerous lines beyond those of the Cisco IP Phone 8865 model.

Note: The Cisco IP Phone 8865 model includes the standard 8865 model and the 8865NR model, which is the non-radio 8865 model. The NR models are designed for military and other customers who need a Key Expansion Module (KEM) but cannot place phones with Bluetooth or other radios on their premises. All attributes of the 8865 and 8865NR are identical except that the 8865NR has no Bluetooth radio and WiFi radio on its boards.

The Cisco IP Phone 8865 Key Expansion Module extends the capabilities of Cisco IP Phone 8865 and 8865NR, models with additional buttons and a color LCD display. This key expansion module adds 14 physical keys with access to 14 additional keys, using the page keys, for a total of 28 additional keys. You can connect up to three 8865 Key Expansion Modules to the IP Phone 8865 and 8865NR,

The 8865 Key Expansion Module comes with a foot stand and all necessary hardware to connect it directly to the base device in the traditional side-by-side fashion.

Features and benefits

The large LCD displays of the Cisco IP Phone 8865 Key Expansion Module allows for quick and easy identification of associated buttons. Using the settings menu of the IP Phone 8865 and 8865NR models, you can adjust the brightness of the individual KEM LCD according to your preference.

The primary function of the 8865 Key Expansion Module is to provide additional keys for directory numbers, speed dial, or programmable feature keys to the IP Phone 8865 and 8865NR models. These keys are illuminated, and when configured as directory numbers or shared-line keys they allow for easy identification of line status. The 8865 Key Expansion Module is an ideal call-coverage tool. It provides features that are similar, but not intended to be directly comparable to those of traditional Direct Station Selection/Busy Lamp Field (DSS/BLF) modules; therefore, it is neither an operator nor an attendant console.

The two illuminated page buttons below the Cisco IP Phone 8865 Key Expansion Module display allow you to shift between the first and second page of 14 buttons, providing access to all 28 keys.
